Landscape Photography Tours

An exclusive day trip around the Isles of Lewis and Harris with photography in mind - not only will I drive you to the special places, but I'll share with you some of my hints and tips for getting the most out of the Hebridean landscape.

Waves

There are usually some spectacular waves to photograph, and I can take you to the best beaches, give you advice on getting the best out of your camera.  Even if the waves aren't huge, they are a great photographic challenge. This particular shot was taken at one of the stunning west coast of Lewis locations we'll go to.

Beaches

The greatest beaches in the world are in the Hebrides (in my humble opinion!) - such a huge variety too, and a day trip with me can taken in a range of big beaches, small beaches, sandy beaches, rocky beaches, but guarantee you to see some very special locations.

Dramatic

There is drama in the skies and in the seas and in the very rock itself in the Hebrides and I'll make sure you get to see some of that drama on your day trip.

Historic

There are some incredible places, such as Callanish Stones which are often a photographers delight (so they sometimes get busy!) but I can take you to the busy ones or the quieter locations, we can choose!

Surf/Outdoor Sports

If you are a surfer and fancy a selection of shots of you in action, to prove to your mates that you did get up on your feet on the board at the crest of a huge wave, you can include that in your trip. If not, we may be lucky enough to see a surfer in action. Just drop me a message to discuss if you have an idea or suggestion? This is your trip so we can adapt (within reason of course!)

Wildlife

The wildlife of the Hebrides is world renown and I know where to find some of it, as its all around in the landscape.  If a full wildlife trip is what you are looking for, then I know the man to ask, Rob Howard!  If you want a bit of landscape with a bit of wildlife, I can happily oblige.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel

You'll be picked up by me from a convenient venue (maybe where you are staying, or somewhere you leave your car).  You can travel in your own vehicle in convoy with me, but my preference is that we travel together so I can talk about the locations we see en route and build your tour experience as we go.   I have a comfortable car that can seat two passengers and enough room in the boot for camera gear.  We'll include toilet stops and somewhere to eat our packed lunch (you'll need to bring or provide your own - we can call in at shops en route if required, but there aren't that many where we'll be going.

Safety

I am responsible for taking you to see some amazing places and advise on photography.  I'll also be cautious and advise caution, especially where we are on a beach, cliffs, etc. We won't go anywhere which is dangerous if you keep to the path, but like any outdoor photography there is risk to manage, and I ask that you take responsibility and that you heed my advise.   I am not responsible for your health and safety on this tour. My vehicle is well maintained and insured and I have full insurance.   I have a full clean driving licence and also a clean DBS check (police check) and can provide references.

Photography Kit

You'll need your own gear, but don't worry too if you only have a cheap camera or even a mobile phone.  Your gear is your own responsibility, so make sure you have a suitable bag which is waterproof in case of rain!

Weather

The weather is of course unpredictable - in the event of a safety risk or impossible conditions, I will provide a refund, or a reschedule, but there are photos to be had on even the wildest days.  There isn't a wrong kind of weather, just the wrong kind of clothing!  So ideally you'd need walking boots, waterproof coat and trousers etc.  If its high summer, you may need a bit of sunscreen, but you probably will need the waterproofs too! If in doubt, just ask.

Mobility/Accessibility

I want to make the tour work for you, so just get in touch about what you want to do or don't want to do.  We won't have time to walk for miles,  and you don't need to be a mountain goat, but there will be some gentle walking. I can adjust the amount of walking to cater for most people.  I am passionate about making this an experience for as many people as possible, and will make reasonable adjustments where I absolutely can, but clearly some beaches and locations are difficult to access. Determination and planning may mean that we can overcome barriers together, so do contact me if you aren't sure or have an idea and we'll see if we can make it happen.

Cost and Payment

The cost of the day is £250 per person, and 40% is payable as a deposit (refundable at my discretion) and the remainder the day before.  Payment cannot be in cash - once booked, I will send you an invoice.  I can accommodate a total of 2 people on a trip - a booking for two is £400.

Timing

Much depends on the time of year - the sunrises and sunsets are very special and it may be possible to do both at certain times of the year, but during winter there just aren't that many daylight hours, but we can include some night sky photography instead.  Much depends on your energy levels and what you are looking for - we'll build the tour together around you and your photography, and the weather and time of year.
